The Most Unique Places to Visit in Jackson

No two cities are ever completely alike. All cities have their own unique things to do, places to visit, and things to see. One of the most exciting things about moving to a new city is getting to explore the area and discover all the things that make your city special.

As a resident of either HomeFirst™’s English Meadows or Walnut Ridge manufactured housing communities, you’ll have the chance to live in and explore beautiful Jackson, Michigan. Jackson is a truly one-of-a-kind city full of places and experiences that you’d be hard pressed to find anywhere else. To help you get started, here are just a few of the most unique places you can visit in Jackson:

The Michigan Theater

The Michigan Theater has been a staple of downtown Jackson since 1930. Originally built to be a movie/vaudeville theater, the Michigan Theater continued to operate as a movie theater until 1978. In 1993, the theater was taken over by a non-profit organization who now uses the theater to host events like plays, concerts, meetings, and occasional movie screenings. The theater’s décor had undergone several changes during its time as a movie theater, but the non-profit organization has worked very hard to restore the theater to how it looked when it first opened.

Cherry Creek Old Schoolhouse Winery

You can find wineries and vineyards in lots of cities, but most wineries are not located in schoolhouses built in the 1870s. The Cherry Creek Old Schoolhouse Winery in nearby Brooklyn, Michigan is a very fun place to visit, relax, sample some wine, or enjoy one of their events. They frequently have live musical performances, crafting classes, and other fun activities. In addition to wine, you’ll also have the chance to sample lots of gourmet foods like freshly made fudge and fruit preserves. Have kids? The Cherry Creek Old Schoolhouse winery is a family friendly winery. In fact, they allow all kids under the age of 12 to ring the old schoolhouse bell once before their parents are served.

Jackson Historic Prison Tours

Did you know the city of Jackson was home to Michigan’s first state prison? In fact, this prison was once the largest walled prison in the world. If you take one of Jackson’s Historic Prison Tours, you’ll get to learn all about the history of Jackson’s Old Prison. The tour begins in the Michigan Theater, where you’ll watch a presentation about what life was like for inmates and the guards of the Old Prison. From there, you stop for lunch at one of Jackson’s many restaurants before heading over to the Old Prison for a tour. The Old Prison was closed in 1934 and has since been converted into the Armory Arts Village, a community for artists. Between the history of the building and its current purpose, these tours feature a completely unique combination of prison history, art, and architecture.

The Cascades

The Cascades are definitely one of Jackson’s most famous landmarks. This is a fixture with 16 separate waterfalls, 6 fountains, and 3 reflecting pools. At night, the Cascades are illuminated by different colored lights, making for a spectacular view. During the summer months, there are regular live music performances in nearby Sparks Park. On a few occasions throughout the year, you can even watch spectacular fireworks displays by the fountain. While you’re in the area, you can also play a round of golf at the Cascades Golf Course, get some ice cream from the Cascades Ice Cream Co., or take a tour of the historic Cascades Manor House.
