Mini-Summer Vacations Close to Home
Summer is a great time to take a vacation but you don’t have to go far, or spend a lot of money to have some family fun. Here are some great, free places to visit in your own backyard:
Belle Isle – Belle Isle is a 982-acre island park in the Detroit River, between the United States mainland and Canada. It is connected to the rest of Detroit, Michigan by the MacArthur Bridge and has something for everyone. Whether it’s nature, physical fitness, history, or architecture you seek, you’ll have a great time exploring the island. Admission and most of the park’s attractions are free. Campus Martius – Campus Martius is the commercial center and heart of Detroit. The Campus Martius district is a 24-hour neighborhood including offices, residents, 35+ dining options, and retail outlets. Free events throughout the summer include concerts, movies and a beach!
Riverfront – Detroit’s East Riverfront, also known as the Detroit Riverwalk, is 3 ½ miles and extends from Joe Louis Arena to Gabriel Richard Park, just beyond the MacArthur (Belle Isle) Bridge. Also included in the Riverfront property are Hart Plaza, the Port Authority, GM Plaza, Rivard Plaza, Chene Park and Gabriel Richard Park. There is lot to do along the riverfront besides just going for a walk. Summer events include Yoga, Reading and Rhythm, Soiree on the Greenway, Walking Tours and more!
