Making the Most of the Northfield Township Area Library
Even in the digital age we live in, libraries are still an extremely valuable community resource. In a 2013 study by the Pew Research Center, 95% of Americans over the age of 16 believe that the resources libraries are a vital way to provide everyone with a chance to succeed in life. 81% of respondents also said that public libraries provide services that would be difficult to find elsewhere.
Since 1989, the Northfield Township Area Library has been an important part of the Whitmore Lake community. Every year, they host over 200 events and programs for the community including book clubs, storytimes for children, after school activities, teen groups, resources for home schoolers, fitness events, events for seniors, and so much more. When they opened their doors in 1989, they only had about 650 registered members and 8,500 books, but they’ve since grown to have 5,000 registered members, over 15,000 books, 1,600 audiobooks, and over 800 movies on DVD. Members also have the ability to download electronic books and audiobooks.
The Northfield Township Area Library is located in the historic Dodge House at 125 Barker Road, which was originally built in the 1840s. The library recently underwent an expansion project so they would be better able to meet the needs of the community. The new addition to the building not only provides more space to house their collection of books, it also created extra space for meetings.
The Northfield Township Area Library can also help you explore your family’s history. The Northfield Township Area Library has many different print publications that are very helpful for genealogical research. Members can also use the library edition of Ancestry.com, which can provide you with access to historical documents and records from over 7,000 databases!
