Get Involved in the Arts in Jackson

Something a lot of people don’t realize about Jackson, Michigan is that there are a lot of amazing programs here that are perfect for a child, or even an adult, with an interest in the arts. When you live in our Walnut Ridge or English Meadows communities, you won’t have to make trips to cities like Ann Arbor or Detroit or spend a small fortune for your children to have great cultural experiences — you’ll have plenty of options right in your own backyard!

First of all, as a resident of Walnut Ridge or English Meadows, your children will be able to attend school in the Jackson Public Schools district, which offers some excellent arts programs. Jackson High School has four different concert bands, plus the only high school orchestra in Jackson County. Their marching band has performed during halftime at the Outback Bowl in Tampa, Florida. Jackson High School also has two choirs, plus one extracurricular choir group. These choirs have performed at two presidential inaugurations in 2001 and 2009 and performed at other White House functions in 1998, 2004, and 2007. The school also offers classes in drama, art, sculpture, and drawing.

An aspiring actor or actress might be interested in getting involved with the Center Stage Jackson community theater group. Their youth theater group, which is open to all children in Jackson County who are in 3rd through 9th grades. There’s no cost to participate, but first-time participants need to purchase a makeup kit for about $20, which can be used again in future shows. Teenagers who are too old for the youth theater group are welcome to participate in Center Stage’s main theater group. Or, if you or your teenager would prefer to be involved behind the scenes, they’re always looking for volunteers to help with things like ushering, building sets, being stagehands, working with lighting or sound, and so much more!

Children in our Walnut Ridge and English Meadows communities can also participate in the Jackson School of the Arts, which is a non-profit organization dedicated to making sure kids in Jackson County are able to learn more about the arts, regardless of their family’s financial means. They offer dance, art, and drama classes, plus after school and summer classes and other programs, for kids aged 2½ to 17. Although their classes are mainly aimed at kids, the Jackson School of the Arts does have some classes for adults, too!

If your child is a budding musician, they could join the Jackson Symphony Orchestra Community Music School. Since 1992, the Community Music School has been a way for the Jackson Symphony Orchestra to reach out to the community and encourage the next generation of musicians. They have various affordable music classes for kids of all ages, ranging from babies and toddlers to teenagers, plus the occasional class for adults. For those who need some one-on-one instruction, private lessons are an option, too.
