The Big 400 Maple Festival in Chelsea March 21-22
Michigan is one of the top states in the country for maple production and when spring arrives, it’s time to start harvesting all that maple. From March 21-22, The Big 400 will be celebrating the arrival of maple season with the third annual Maple Festival. Since The Big 400 encompasses many cities within a 20 mile by 20 mile radius, the maple festival will have events happening in several cities within that area including Chelsea, Manchester, Jackson, and more.
No maple festival would be complete without pancakes and maple syrup! Come by the Chelsea Alehouse at 420 N. Main Street on either March 21 or 22 from 8:00-11:30 AM for pancakes, potatoes, and bacon. All proceeds from the breakfasts will go to benefit The Big 400, which is an organization dedicated to boosting the economy of the area by increasing tourist awareness.
There will be many opportunities to learn about all about maple and how it is harvested. The Eddy Discovery Center in Chelsea, Dahlem Environmental Education Center in Jackson, McLennan Maple Syrup in Manchester, and Hudson Mills Metropark in Dexter will all have events that include things like guided tours, tapping demonstrations, information about how maple is turned into syrup, the chance to use real maple tapping tools, taste tests, and other hands-on activities. All of these events are great for the whole family! Although the events at the Eddy Discovery Center in Chelsea are free and do not require reservations, there are fees for the events at the other locations and some events may require reservations.
Many local restaurants will have specials to go along with the maple theme. In Chelsea, The Chelsea Alehouse will be offering a special Smoked Maple Porter craft beer during the festival, Cleary’s Pub at 133 S. Main will have a maple-glazed Georgian Bay ruby red trout and a spiced maple bourbon martini. The Garden Mill will be offering discounts on all maple products and the Common Grill at 112 S. Main will have a maple-glazed pork tenderloin special.
