5 Tricks to Stop Spring Allergies

The arrival of spring signals the return of beautiful weather, outdoor barbecues and lush, lively gardens. But for some, it also means the return of sneezing, sniffling, eye watering, itchiness and more. According to WebMD, 35 millions of Americans suffer from hay fever, also known as seasonal allergies. Hay fever is caused by a number of natural allergens that emerge during spring, including airborne pollens, grass, trees, weeds and other natural elements.

If you’re one of the millions of people who suffer from allergies, you should really see an allergist who can customize a treatment option. Taking the following steps will also help you keep your allergies under control:

Vacuuming is important throughout the year, but it’s especially important during spring. It’s the most effective way to eliminate dust and other allergens lurking in your carpet fibers, under tables and in other hard-to-reach areas. While the outdoors can be unpredictable, vacuuming is the best way to keep your home a safe haven from allergies during spring.

Dust Often

Thoroughly vacuuming your home is only half battle. You also need to be cognizant of dust accumulation on counters, tables, shelves, furniture and even televisions. Grab a warm paper towel and wipe down dusty areas every week.

Remove Shoes

Taking off your shoes upon entering your home will help you avoid dragging allergens into your home. Make sure to enforce this rule for guests, too. This is a small step that can make a big difference!

Keep Windows Closed

It’s tempting to leave your windows open on a perfect spring day, but you’re better off leaving them closed. Keeping your windows open will allow airborne pollens to sneak into your home and could trigger a nasty allergic reaction.

Replace AC/Furnace Filters

Change your filters every three months. It’s recommended that you use a filter with a MERV rating of 8 to 12, which will help remove pollen and mold from the air.
