4 Tips for Getting Outdoor Exercise in Colder Weather

As autumn quickly edges into winter, many people find themselves wondering how to get exercise in the cold. While the coming chill means fireside warmth and holiday cheer, it also means increased difficulty in maneuvering outside. It can be hard to motivate yourself to exercise outdoors, especially when it’s so cold your hands and toes go numb. So follow a few easy steps and tips to motivate yourself to get outside and get active!

Tip #1: Bundle up!

Always make sure that you’re wrapped in enough layers of clothes that you won’t freeze. Winter tends to bring colds and flus with it, and prolonged exposure to the cold will make you susceptible to sickness. Make absolutely sure that you’re dressed with a jacket, a hat to protect your ears, and a few pairs of socks. This will ensure that your body heat stays in while you’re exercising. You may discover that as your blood gets pumping you want to remove layers. This is fine; it’s better to have to take layers away than add them on!

Tip #2: Keep moving!

It’s no secret that your blood moves faster when your body does. Faster blood means more perspiration is released and your body temperature is higher overall. If you have a higher body temperature, this will counteract the cold weather around you. Moving fast enough will cause the cool air to feel like a welcome breeze rather than a frigid knife – you might even prefer it to warmer weather!

Tip #3: Make it fun!

Exercising doesn’t have to be a chore, especially when autumn and winter both yield many opportunities for fun. You don’t have to jog around the block to get in a good workout. You can connect with your kids or your own inner child in the fall by raking leaves and jumping in the piles. And during the winter, you can go sledding and burn calories walking back up the hill.

Tip #4: Give yourself rewards!

For increased motivation to exercise, give yourself rewards. This can work year-round, but it’s especially effective when the cold makes you want to stay indoors. Whether you’re allowing yourself a cup of hot chocolate, an extra piece of cake, or another round of a hit computer game, you’ll have something to look forward to even while the cold bites into your skin.

Keeping fit during the colder months will allow you to have a better body and better state of mind overall. Exercise releases endorphins in the brain, which improve your mood. You’ll be able to enjoy the cooler months, spend time with your family, and love your body.
