Oaxaca Calendar 2012: February (featuring Benito Juarez' mother and jacaranda tree in bloom) @bighugelabs
Today is a special day in the month of February and particularly this year, because today is Leap Day and 2012 is a Leap Year! Leap years are every year that is divisible by 4, but not years that are divisible by 100 unless the year is also divisible by 400.

Confusing? Maybe a little bit.

But more simply put, this extra day tacked on to the end of February happens nearly every 4 years. This means that 2012 will have 366 days rather than the regular calendar year of 365 days.

So why do we have leap years? Leap years are required so that our calendar stays in alignment with the full rotation of the earth around the sun. This way, over time, we don’t end up losing calendar days and time.

So now that you know exactly how leap years work and why we have them, here are some fun events to go to celebrate them:

Leap Year 4 Miler : Huron Clinton Metroparks

Leap Year Dive : Brighton

Bach to Basics- A Leap Year Celebration : Lansing

Or if you want to go all out, Disney Parks will be open 24 hours for the leap year! Now that is something your kids probably dream of!
